Tourney to help Brandon Hellgren

A golf tournament to raise funds for Brandon Hellgren, a 7-year-old who has been diagnosed with leukemia, will be Oct. 8 at Cherokee Rose Country Club. The John E. Smiley Jr. “Jay Bird” Memorial Golf Tournament has established Team Brandon to help support Hellgren, the son of Bradwell Institute baseball coach Rhett Hellgren.
All proceeds will go to help cover costs associated with Brandon’s care. Entry costs are $50 per player or $200 per team. Hole sponsors also are sought.

St. James hoops camp

The St. James Sports Center will host a free fundamentals camp Saturday. It is open to boys ages 12-14 and players in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Participants can check in from 9-9:45 a.m. Camp starts at 10 a.m. Campers can bring own lunch, but concessions will be available.
The top 24 campers will be selected to participate in an all-star game, which will be videotaped.
All-star players will receive free jerseys. Campers must bring shorts and shoes.

Basketball sessions set

Basketball fundamental sessions, led by South Georgia Kings founder
Jessie Fleming, are from 1-3 p.m. every Sunday at the Liberty County YMCA.
The fee is $15 per
session.
Fleming also is organizing a new shooting club called the Young Gunz, which will meet twice a week to perfect shooting skills.
