It’s time to ‘Think Pink’

If you watched any NFL games this weekend, you likely noticed a sight that seems to happen only one time per year: masses of muscular, macho men donning the softest shades of pink.

Yep, it’s that time of year again. A month that was once known for ghouls and goblins has now morphed into a month to gobble up pink products – from socks to cosmetics to even Swiffers – to raise awareness for breast cancer and its effects and to raise money for research.

But an article in October issue of Marie Claire magazine urges consumers to use caution when making purchases that are aimed to benefit cancer research and treatment, and I think it’s a worthy message to pass on.

“The Big Business of Breast Cancer” details IRS-recognized non-profits whose executives and founders who have used a giving society as a “get-rich-quick” scheme.

As the magazine reports, “Breast cancer holds a peculiarly powerful sway with us — it's a disease dreaded so profoundly that not supporting the cause feels like tempting fate.”

While I share this as a cautionary tale to keep in mind when you’re deciding between the standard bottle of shampoo and the glittery pink one, I do not at all intend to caution people from giving to reputable organizations within their communities.

And while the city of Savannah is squabbling over Bras on Bra-ton, I’d like to commend the city of Hinesville and the Suzie Q’s for allowing fun and humor to play a part in the month’s fundraising events.

Now through Oct. 14, the group is accepting submissions to its “Art Your Bra” competition. For a $10 fee, you can decorate a clean bra with a tasteful design of your choosing, and it will be featured in a juried art exhibition during a $7 all-you-can-eat pancake dinner at Poole’s Deli on Oct. 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The same evening, Oct. 20, will also mark a special PINK edition of the Hinesville Downtown Farmer’s Market with Liberty County’s pink fire truck, another Books for Boobies used book sale, and volunteers will be “PINKIN’ UP HINESVILLE” with sidewalk chalk and pink ribbons to raise awareness for the cause.
