A traffic stop Thursday afternoon in Liberty County ended up in a fiery wreck and two people transported to local area hospitals.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Christopher Ashdown, a Liberty County sheriff’s deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a blue BMW on Leroy Coffer Highway shortly after 12:30 p.m. Ashdown said the driver of the vehicle did not pull over, and as he approached the Leroy Coffer and U.S. Highway 84 intersection, he struck a Ford F-350 pulling a trailer.

The BMW burst into flames upon impact, and the driver got out of the vehicle and ran to the woods, where he was later arrested.

The BMW driver complained of not being able to breathe.

The driver of the BMW was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah and the F-350 driver was taken to Wayne Memorial in Jesup.

The BMW driver will be facing several pending charges.
