SAVANNAH — On Sept. 23, Savannah/Chatham Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. welcomed 13 new CASA volunteers to its ranks of serving in the best interests of children. The volunteers were joined by CASA staff, board of directors and family, and Juvenile Court Judge John Beam Jr. presided over the ceremony.
Savannah/Chatham CASA serves more than 350 abused or neglected children that are in the foster care system. The group’s 131 volunteers ensure that children are placed in safe, permanent homes. All CASA volunteers must dedicate a year of service to the program and complete 40 hours of training in addition to successfully meeting all pre-screening requirements.
“Often times, the CASA volunteer is the only consistent adult in that child’s life during this vulnerable time. There is always a critical need for volunteers for our program as we provide individualized, unique advocacy for children. The end result is to ensure that the child’s voice is not lost in the foster care and judicial systems,” said Savannah/Chatham CASA Director ZaDonna Slay. “Every child in our community deserves a voice, and through the generous support of our volunteers we are able to promote our mission of providing sound advocacy to children.”
