Button Gwinnett Elementary School’s Relay for Life team got an extra boost in the nick of time. On May 7, after realizing her group had fallen just short of its fundraising goal, team coordinator Jung Cannady, a third-grade teacher, sent a Twitter message to celebrity comedian George Lopez.
“I mentioned I needed $140 to meet my goal for Relay for Life and he ‘tweeted’ me back! Soon after, his producer ‘tweeted ’ me and sent me a message asking for my mailing address,” Cannady said. “When I got home Monday, there was a FedEx package waiting for me. Inside was an autographed picture and a $140 cash donation!”
The teacher said she sent Lopez’s producer a copy of the deposit receipt so Lopez could verify the money was used as a Relay for Life donation.
Cannady also plans to put together a thank-you package for the generous comedian. “As soon as this is printed in the newspaper, I plan on sending George a copy of it along with a pink team shirt, similar to the ones we wore at our campsite,” she said.
