Every Thanksgiving season for the past five years, chef Wendell “Wendy” Singleton has cooked for the senior citizens in the Holmestown community.
He continued the tradition Nov. 21 by serving seniors a Thanksgiving meal at Holmestown Park.
He credits his cooking skills to his mother, the late Leary Mae Singleton. She regularly prepared meals for meetings and parties on Liberty County’s coast. She often served in that capacity for Charlie Jones, a former state representative and attorney, and his wife, Carol.
“I love to cook,” Singleton said. “And since I’ve started this tradition, it has grown to serving nearly 75 dinners this year. Some seniors come and dine at the park, while others wait for Brother EJ Robertson and others to deliver the tasty box of turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, ham, cake, green beans, etc. to them. It has grown tremendously from when I first started. My sisters Doris, Peggy and Brenda help now. Also, I am grateful for donations from (County) Commissioner Gary Gilliard and Next Level Church.”
