Brian Hawkins, administrator of Georgia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries at Baxley, spoke at March’s Goldenheirs meeting.
Hawkins has more than 13 years at the Baxley home. His main topic was abuse and neglect of children.
Most of the children are in the custody of the state of Georgia, from the youth-detention center. There now are 40 children staying at the home with house parents. Money and personnel are problems, he said.
The home provides other services, such as community counseling for approximately 50 children.
There are three Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes in Palmetto.
The Georgia Baptist Children’s Home at Baxley has been ministering to children for 140 years. It began as an orphans’ home and has been self-sufficient for many years. The home gets no cooperative-program funds and is supported by donations from churches and individuals.
The Goldenheirs meet at noon the first Tuesday of every month for lunch and a program of interest to seniors at First Baptist Church, 220 E. Memorial Drive in Hinesville.
All seniors are welcome at meetings.
