Transportation, prescription drugs and supportive services are among the concerns facing Coastal Georgia’s older residents.
Those issues as well as others will be discussed when 47 senior advocates from Coastal Georgia travel to the Atlanta to meet with state legislators.
Senior Week at the Georgia State Capitol is Feb. 27, 28 and March 1. The theme for this year is “Working Together for a Better Life.”
During Senior Week, seniors from all over Georgia will advocate for the 2007 Coalition of Advocates for Georgia’s Elderly (CO-AGE) priorities.
The three-day trip will be coordinated and sponsored by the Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA).
Many of the senior advocates have already made appointments to see their representatives in Atlanta.
The AAA encourages senior citizens to participate more actively in public affairs, in the interest of issues that are important to them and all Older Georgians. One such issue is to support grandparents who raise their grandchildren.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau 164,423 Georgia children are living in grandparent-headed households. Of these children, 98,773 are living in a grandparent-headed household with neither parent present.
Grandparents of all ages are assuming responsibility for their grandchildren when the parents, for a variety of reasons, are unable to provide adequate and nurturing care.
The additional expenses of raising a grandchild many times create financial hardship for many seniors.
Advocates are planning to ask for some financial assistance for these grandparents, or at least 80 percent of that received by children in the foster care system.
The purpose of this trip is to provide older citizens with avenues to serve as senior issue resources and advocates in their communities.
