Farewell, Lou Holtz.

After nine years as a college football analyst for ESPN, Holtz and the worldwide leader in sports have decided to part ways, according to a report from Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated.

Before his broadcasting career, Holtz served as head football coach at the University of Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996. In his 11 seasons guiding the Irish, Holtz captured the school record for most games coached and ranks second in total victories. In 1988, Holtz led undefeated Notre Dame to a victory over No. 3-ranked West Virginia in the national championship game.

But football isnt the most important thing to Holtz. In fact, the 78-year old said he plans to spend his free time with his wife, Beth.

I owe it to her to spend a little more time with her, said Holtz. I said that last year too.

Holtzs love for family can be attributed to his strong Catholic heritage. To this day, he credits the Sisters of Notre Dame St. Aloysius grade school for building his belief in God as a youngster in East Liverpool, Ohio.

The Sistersinfluenced my life tremendously," he said. "This was due to the fact that they encouraged you always to make sure that God is the focus of your life, and they didnt allow you to do anything except to the very best of your ability.

In honor of Holtzs retirement, here is a list of five quotes reflecting his feelings toward God and life:

God does answer your prayers, but its not always in the way you expect. God knows whats best for us, though, so theres no need to worry when things dont go how we originally wanted them to go. We just have to be willing to make changes and go a different route sometimes.

I follow three rules: Do the right thing, do the best you can and always show people you care. Youve got to make a sincere attempt to have the right goals to begin with, then go after them with appropriate effort, and remember that you cant achieve anything great without the help of others.

I think life is a matter of choices and that wherever we are, good or bad, is because of choices we make.
