“Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side. Then he said to them, ‘Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me. Humility seems to be an ever-elusive characteristic, even in those who find themselves proclaiming Christ.

Ironically, we speak it, yet gauge our greatness or importance to the kingdom of God. Comparisons to one person or another, how much we give, how much we do, how many Bible verses we can quote, how many Sunday-school awards we receive — all being compared to the performance of others around us.

Certainly, in the light of those comparisons, we may be able to see ourselves as greater or more important than others, but when we compare ourselves to the true standard — Jesus — the Bible says we are as filthy rags. Harsh words, right? Wrong! Jesus is creating a paradigm shift, a new way of thinking, teaching us that there is nothing better anyone can do than serve.

Understand that this is at the core of who Jesus is. If the Greatest came in humility to serve, shouldn’t we? It’s not about status or who the world thinks we are; it’s about becoming who Jesus created us to be — humble servants loving his creation.
