Every February, love becomes the topic for a few weeks. There is nothing wrong with that idea, though it should be the topic of discussion all the time.
We have to make determinations as to whom and what we will love. God determined that men and women should love each other and form a home (Genesis 1, 2). He desires that children be cared for by loving parents (Ephesians 6:4). To understand love, looking at God’s love will help, for his love knows no bounds as to sacrifice (giving his Son), care (providing for man) and mercy (2 Peter 3:9).
After learning of God’s love then one must make the decision to either love good things (as God wants) or evil things (as Satan wants). This choice will be a life-changing decision.
John reveals to all that there is a battle being fought every day as to what to love. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof; but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever” (1 John 2:15-17).
This battle involves everyone on Earth. The world is full of temptations for young and old alike. Today, there seems to be less time for the home, family and God. A struggle goes on to provide and maintain a standard of living and the proper spiritual nurturing.
Today, many are getting further and further away from God. As this is happening, what should be the main goal of every life — preparing for eternity — becomes more obscure.
If we desire to live for eternity with God in heaven, we must search for and follow the steps of Jesus as we travel through this world (1 Peter 2:21). Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
Love of the world is described as “the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life.” Those are the subtitles for every sin known to man. Mother Eve fell to temptation by these things (Genesis 3:1-6).
It is by these things that man is drawn away by temptation and into sin. James tells us that “lust when it is conceived bringeth forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:13-15).
In Genesis 13, we find that Abram and Lot’s herdsmen could not dwell together. Because of this strife, Abram proposed a resolution in Genesis 13:8-9. He would go the opposite of the direction Lot chose to go. Lot looked upon the well-watered plains of the Jordan and chose there to take his family.
In his vision, he only saw fertile fields and plenty of water for his livestock. He did not think about what might befall him and his family if they went to this area.  Just a few chapters later, we find what a terrible mistake Lot had made. He chose to love the physical things more than to love good things.  
In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus was tempted by Satan with the same ideas: lust of the flesh and eyes and pride of life. Jesus used the Scriptures to answer the temptations.
This gives us an idea of just how important the knowledge of God’s word should be to us. This knowledge will help us to learn love’s true meaning and impart this to those around us.
We all must choose what we are going to love and how. If we follow God’s word, we can know love, love others and have a great life. Loving God and loving as God loves will help us to have better homes and lives.
If we love God, we will keep his commandments and heaven can be our home.
