“God has dropped us into a little piece of heaven,” the new pastor of the Midway United Methodist Church the Rev. Douglas J. Walker said. “Members have welcomed us with open arms.”
Walker is not new to the ministry or serving as a pastor. In 1988, he served as associate pastor of the Swainsboro United Methodist Church and then associate pastor of the Mulberry United Methodist Church in Macon. He also served as senior pastor of the Doles United Methodist Church in Macon; Epworth United Methodist Church in Jesup and Reidsville United Methodist Church.
“We are trying to make Midway United Methodist a more family oriented ministry. The number one growth area is to establish an afternoon children’s outreach to the community. We have started a visitation program in the community to let people know they are welcome,” he said. “We are excited and delighted to be here. God has placed us here to impact the community.
“As a pastor, I want to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and listen to Him. I don’t want to run ahead of God. I have a passion for evangelism. I love bringing the gospel to the community.
“Since my arrival, we have seen an increase in attendance. The people are excited. There is enthusiasm among the members.”
Midway United Methodist has a food pantry where the church reaches out to help those in need. Walker and his wife, Lynn, have also done mission work in Mexico. He performed mission work in Brazil and with the Hispanic community in Georgia.
His vision for the church is to draw people of all walks of life into a relationship with God.
“God loves me, and I have to have a personal relationship with Him to tell others about Him. I cannot talk or preach about a relationship with God if I don’t have a relationship with Him,” he said.
Walker advises pastors to stay close to God.
“When you stay close to God, then you will see fruit. We must abide in Jesus as reflected in the Scripture according to the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 15,” he said.
The Walkers live in Midway, where Lynn Walker teaches seventh grade at the middle school. They have four children; Colt, Jake, Ian and India.
The pastor says he loves sports and used to play basketball, tennis and golf. He plans to do some fishing while here .
“We enjoy walking early in the morning,” he said.
Walker invites those interested to fellowship at the Midway United Methodist on 215 Martin Road in Midway. Services are every Sunday at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m., with Sunday school at 10.
“We are getting ready to start two new Sunday school classes in September; one for new members and one for older adults. Bible Study will be on Wednesday nights at 7, starting in September,” Walker said.
