Pope Francis tweets, uses YouTube and now he can be followed on Instagram.

On Saturday, Pope Francis announced on Twitter that he created an Instagram account.

The Instagram account, @franciscus, has over 1.6M followers. The pope captions his photos in multiple languages. His first post showed the pope praying with the caption Pray for me.

Pope Francis posted his first picture on Instagram with the help of Kevin Systrom, the CEO and co-founder of Instagram. Systrom shared a post on Instagram documenting the experience.

Monsignor Dario Vigan, the Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications, told Vatican Radio Pope Francis desired to start an Instagram account because photos can convey messages that words cannot.

In his biography on Instagram, the Pope wrote, I want to walk with you along the way of God's mercy and tenderness."

Earlier this year, Pope Francis released his monthly prayer intentions in a video for the first time.
