We must follow the Holy Spirit

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.” (John 16:13 NIV)
We can all remember times in our lives when we had inclinations to do something a certain way or to say something at a certain time. We make statements like “something told me to do it that way” or “something told me go in that direction.” That “something” is actually the Holy Spirit. He is the voice God uses to lead and guide us to truth.
When traveling, many of us use navigation systems. Sometimes a GPS will send a driver on a longer route because road or address information is not current. The Holy Spirit is a navigation system who never leads us in the wrong direction or takes the long way around. God is not hiding His will for us. He will speak to our hearts, but it is our responsibility to hear what He is saying.
Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the spirit of truth. He speaks only what He hears from our heavenly Father. The Bible says the eyes of the Lord are everywhere. So we know we can trust in and depend on God to steer us through the darkest and most difficult times in our lives.
Maybe you’ve had an especially difficult week. Maybe you’re somewhere between a rock and a hard place. Remember this: When the storms of life are raging, your answer may not be in the wind, the earthquake or even in the fire. You must stop, look and listen for a small voice. Help is not just on the way — it’s under way.
We are God’s children and He never leaves us or forsakes us. Be encouraged and follow your leader, the Holy Spirit, our comforter and counselor.
