Recently, I went to the mountains and saw this beautiful estate owned by some textile magnate who passed away several years ago. I thought how great it would be to own it and live there.
Part of the problem is that I could never afford it. But even if I could, just how long would I really enjoy it? If I lived to be 100 years old, there still is a limit to how long I could live there, and then someone else would enjoy it.
Some people work hard all their lives planning to retire in that special place, only to die before their dreams become a reality or to enjoy it for a very short time. For some, they seem to work hard for nothing, for things that are not really that important. For many, life is just a big disappointment.
Life doesn’t have to be that way. We can live a life in which we know that at the end of it here on Earth, we can enjoy pleasures that cannot be compared to anything this life offers. We can live in a mansion for eternity and not ever worry about how long we have to enjoy it.
The problem is that some choose to try to gain everything this world offers and neglect the most important thing in life: the salvation of our souls. The Scriptures ask this important question: “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his soul?”
In other words, if you could possess anything this world could offer, it wouldn’t compare to the importance of getting in a right relationship with God.
The Scriptures also teach us that this is only possible by choosing to follow Jesus Christ. The good news is, the choice is ours.
What is really important in this life?
