Linda Swain, director of retirement services for Baptist Village Retirement Communities in Waycross, spoke to the Golden Heirs on May 4 at First Baptist Church in Hinesville.
Swain said Baptist Village is a retirement community designed to improve seniors’ quality of life. In 1955, the first 58 residents moved in. Since then, the community has expanded to 172 acres and now includes independent homes, duplexes, apartments, a nursing home, an assisted-living program and health-care facilities.
Baptist Village offers computer classes and other activities. Swain said the community’s mission is “to honor God in everything we do.” The community even has a “claim to fame” — it is home to the largest live oak tree in Georgia, according to the retirement services director.
Living in a community that provides home and yard maintenance leaves residents free to enjoy other things, Swain said, and Baptist Village tries to keep seniors busy. Religious services are available in the chapel. There is a wellness center where residents can participate in exercise classes or use workout equipment alone. There also is a lake for fishing.
The Golden Heirs senior citizens group meets on the first Tuesday of each month at noon for a covered-dish lunch and a program. The next program will feature a member of the Hinesville Police Department, who will talk about personal security.
