Kids run for Armed Forces Day
Weekly FMWR briefing for May 5-11

A Catch and Release Bass Tournament will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday at Fort Stewart's Pineview Lake.

On-site registration will be accepted that day. The tournament is open to everyone, even civilians. Participants must have proper fishing permits, unless 15 or younger. Fees vary and are based on registration date.

Cash prizes are $250 for first-place (heaviest combined weight of up to five bass) and $100 for the largest bass. Door prizes will be awarded after weigh-in. 

Anglers can fish from the bank or boat, trolling motors only. No live bait will be permitted.

Kids Run 2014

Non-competitive runs, as part of national Armed Forces Day, start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Jordan Fitness Center on Stewart and at Stephen Douglas Street and North Perimeter Road on Hunter.

Youth aged 5-13 are invited to participate. Ages 5-6 will run a half mile, ages 7-8 one mile, and ages 9-13 two miles. There’s no charge, and T-shirts will be awarded to all youth runners. Parents may run with children. Sign up at www.Americaskidsrun.org by clicking on registration and then selecting Fort Stewart or Hunter from the drop-down menu.

Mothers' Day golf

To honor mothers on Mother’s Day at Hunter Golf Course, their golf is free after noon Sunday with the purchase by another player of an 18-hole greens fee and golf cart. For more information, call 315-9115.

 

Mothers' Day at Corkan

In appreciation of everything mothers do Corkan Family Recreation is offering one free game or admission to any activity from noon-6 p.m. Sunday. Take Mom out for brunch, then bring her to Corkan for fun. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

Aeration of greens

During aeration of the greens at Hunter Golf Course, May 12-13, play will be curtailed to the front or back nine holes. For information, call 315-9115.

 

Pizza Party Day

Stewart Bowling Center celebrates National Pizza Party Day from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. May 16 by offering the weekday rate for Pizza Pin and Pops promotion.

Family Adventure Quest

Registration now for the Family Adventure Quest at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area, scheduled May 16-17.

At the campout filled with activities families will compete in various events, with points awarded in each. The family with the most points at the end will be crowned Fort Stewart’s Family Adventure Quest winner for 2014.

The fun will include the showing of “Yogi Bear,” rated PG.

Free boat inspection

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct courtesy vessel inspections from 8 a.m.-noon May 17 at Outdoor Recreation at Hunter Army Airfield.

Proof of ownership of the vessel is required. The inspection is to help the community learn proper vessel requirements. No citations will be issued.

Splashpark to open

The Springs splashpark at Cypress Creek opens for the season May 19. Hours are 11:30 a.m.-7 p.m. The cost is $2 per person, 3 and older. Younger children get in free. Diapers for swimmers are required for children not potty trained.

UFC Fit

The Air Force Reserve presents the 2014 UFC Fit Tour, featuring UFC coach Mike Dolce and former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, on May 21 at Newman Fitness Center.

A fitness workshop, from 5-6:30 p.m., will be followed by a meet and greet from 6:30-8. There will be a discussion of fitness, diet and exercise, plus a Q&A and UFC fighter pictures/autographs.

Pools to open

Fort Stewart and Hunter outdoor swimming pools open on Memorial Day weekend, starting on May 24.

Costs will be $3 for a daily pass, or $80 for a family season pass. Season passes will be available at the Fort Stewart and Hunter Leisure Travel offices beginning May 15.

Corkan's outdoor pool, in the Corkan Family Recreation Area, will be open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday-Monday (closed on Tuesday). 

Bryan Village pool, off Austin Road next to the child care center, will be open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday only.

Hunter outdoor pool and splashpark, behind Hunter Club, will be open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday).
