Lauren White, a seventh-grader at Midway Middle School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Liberty Coastal Lions Club of Midway.
White’s poster was among more than 60 submitted by the students in Lauri Jones’ art classes at MMS. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people. Posters were judged on originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “The Power of Peace.”
Club President Jerry Leland said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the MMS students.  “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” he said. “I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
White’s poster will advance through district, state and international levels of competition, if she is to be declared the international winner.
“Our club is cheering for Lauren as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world” Leland said.
Locally, White, Kayla Huggins, who won second place, and Todd Trisdale, who took third, were honored for  participating by club members at the school. Their posters were displayed at the Midway Branch of The Heritage Bank and have been moved to Midway City Hall.
The top three students received award certificates and savings bonds from the club, Angie’s Restaurant and The Heritage Bank.
