Hinesville’s City Council on Thursday learned about Michelle Obama’s "Let’s Move" campaign when they watched an informational presentation designed to encourage mayors and elected officials to apply for authorized "Let’s Move" city, county and town designations.

This campaign is a nationwide initiative created by Obama and is dedicated to ending childhood obesity completely within one generation.

There are four main pillars that comprise Obama’s initiative:

1. Creating a healthy start for children by giving parents information on health and creating healthy environments for children to grow up in.

2. Providing healthy food in schools.

3. Increasing every family’s access to healthy foods by making them more affordable.

4. Increasing childhood physical activity.

According to Thursday’s presentation, the campaign has many supporters, including singer Beyoncé, the Disney Channel, and members of MLB, the NHL and the NFL, all of whom are helping to spread the word and create fun ways to get moving. Beyoncé recently created choreographed moves for one of her most popular songs, "Get Me Bodied," and taught them to a group of children to help them understand that exercise can be fun.

Obama said she created this program to help deal with the fact that during the past 30 years, childhood obesity rates have tripled and one in three American children is now overweight or obese, compared with five percent in the 1970s.

If Hinesville signs up as a prospective "Let’s Move" city, officials must publicly commit to making at least one change during a one-year period in each of the four pillars of the initiative. Once the commitment has been made, the federal government works with the city to support its efforts.

The campaign would provide to council members a tool kit that includes ideas for implementing the campaign and strategies for getting people involved.

On the campaign’s website, Obama stresses the importance of involving city governments, school boards and recreation departments as well as families, churches and local businesses to create a healthier environment for America’s children.
