SAVANNAH — SouthCoast Imaging Center, recently added 3-D mammography at 5353 Reynolds St.
The technology produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue, which helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping breast tissue.
Recent studies have shown the following results from the introduction of 3D mammography into women’s imaging practices:
• 53 percent increase in invasive cancer-detection rates
• 35 percent increase in cancer-detection rates
• 37 percent decrease in call-back rates
• 11 percent decrease in biopsy rates
The screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in seconds. Instead of viewing all the complexities of the breast tissue in one flat image, doctors can examine the tissue one layer at a time. 3-D mammography is for all screening and diagnostic mammography patients, especially those receiving a baseline screening, who have dense breast tissue and/or women with a personal history of breast can-
cer.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival.
