A teacher and students at Liberty County High School recently were recognized by Liberty County Health Department Nurse Manager Annie Washington for their initiative in aiding the health department with breast-cancer outreach in the community.
Washington presented a plaque to LCHS early-childhood education teacher Jana Shields and LCHS juniors Kiana Futrell and Megan Kesner as a token of appreciation for their facilitation of a $700 donation that helped fund educational outreach and incentives for women who come in for mammography services.
Shields, Futrell, Kesner and other LCHS students raised the money by selling breast-cancer awareness T-shirts and encouraging students and faculty members to buy and wear the shirts on “Pink Panther Day” at the school.
The project provided the health department with additional funding to support breast-cancer awareness, Washington said.
“We don’t have extra funding for incentives and breast-cancer educational materials,  so this donation is wonderful and has really helped our outreach efforts in Liberty County,” she said.
