Long County Commission Chairman Mike Riddle took part in the annual Georgia Pre-K Week on Oct. 7 by reading to the Pre-K class at Long County High School.

Riddle read “Me and My Dragon, Scared of Halloween” by David Biedrzycki. The book is about a little boy who helped his dragon overcome his fear of monsters at Halloween.

The Pre-K class is a part of the Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education program, which incorporates prospective teachers from students at the high school.  The teachers in the class are Kristie Garcia and Nikki Gordon.

Riddle said the program is a plus for both the high school students and the Pre-K kids.

"The CTAE program is a great program for the high school students in that it helps them identify possible career paths and even initiates training for those jobs,” Riddle said. “Before they even graduate these students get a preview of a job that might interest them. And as for the youngsters, they get to work with qualified teachers but also motivated students who want to be a part of the teaching process.”

Riddle said that he has always enjoyed working with students of all ages, but he really enjoys helping younger kids with their reading.

"I love taking part and supporting these reading programs, my wife Gina works at the media center at Smiley Elementary School, and I am always on board for helping with any of these type programs,” he said. “Reading is the foundation for all of the other subjects, and ensuring that kids enjoy reading at an early age will help them as they move up through the grades.”
