Mayors' Motorcase gift collection going

The city of Hinesville recently started collected donated gifts for the 2010 Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade. Community members can help by delivering donations to the Hinesville Police Department or by taking part in the Cycles for Charity fundraiser Nov. 6.
In 1958, the Georgia Municipal Association and then-Gov. Ernest Vandiver created the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade to help mental health and developmentally disabled hospital patients celebrate the holidays by providing the patients with presents.
Georgia’s seven regional mental health hospitals house thousands of residents and many of them have lived in the facilities for most of their lives. Some patients have little, if any, contact with or support from friends and family.
“The hospital clients are part of our community, drawn from our region, and we would like to encourage you to remember them now and during the holiday season,” said Holly Stevens, Hinesville human resources manager.
City officials will deliver the gifts to Georgia Regional Hospital on Dec. 8. Anyone interested in participating can call Niesha Williams at 876-3564 for information.
