A standing-room only crowd packed Vann's Restaurant on Thursday night for the third annual Pouring 4 Paws fundraiser to benefit the Liberty Humane Shelter. Teams of celebrity bartenders, some dressed in outrageous costumes, served and poured, dropping their tips into a bucket for the shelter staff to tally.
Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Director Kenny Smiley emceed the event and later dressed to the nines to join his team of bartenders, "Kenny G and the Suga Mamas."
"We want to thank our master of ceremony, Kenny Smiley, who is always the life of the party, Vann's and staff for letting us have our fundraisers there, many local businesses who provided our wonderful door prizes, CJ, who helped with most of our door prizes and all the volunteers who helped to make it a success," said Liberty Humane Shelter board member Susan Todd.
Todd said this year's "Top Dog Award" went to Bob Pirkle and Chris Redd, who took first place for the night. Todd said Judy Rodgers from Affordable Homes matched their winnings to tie for first place. Kelly Davis and Richard Braun came in second.
Each team was encouraged to have a theme and music. Maureen Mobley and friends were named "most spirited team," earning them the "Crazy Cats Award." Team Shanken was acknowledged for rising to the challenge and putting on a great show.
"This year's Pouring 4 Paws fell short of the desired $10,000 mark that they accomplished in 2006," Todd said. "But 2009 should prove to be interesting with Bob Pirkle committing to help Liberty Humane shelter raise $20,000 at the annual Pouring 4 Paws event, which has tentatively been scheduled for June 2009 at Vann's."
This weekend, the Liberty Humane Shelter will have a Doggy Fun Day at the VFW Post on Highway 196 from noon-4 p.m. Activities for children include a mega-slide, moon walk, bounce house, face painting, pony rides, games and prizes.
There will be activities for the pets as well, including a portrait studio, rabies clinic, microchipping, a pageant, a paws parade and pawicures.
