Faculty members of Smiley Elementary joined to honor Nancy Carter and John Carter for their years of dedication and service as Georgia educators. A celebratory dinner was held at the Jekyll Island Resort, and a PowerPoint presentation, which depicted two lives obviously dedicated to family and teaching, served as a tribute to the retirees.
Nancy Carter taught in Long County for thirty years, leading classes from kindergarten through eighth grades. For the past three years, Carter taught third grade science, social studies extension and creative writing. She instructed approximately one hundred students each day.
Mrs. Carter has lived in Long County for 35 years. She is married to Bud Carter and has one son, Chris. He and his wife, Deonna, have two sons, Christopher and Alex. Mrs. Carter enjoys reading, baking, working in the yard and spending time with her family.
John Carter has been teaching in Long County for two years. He taught third grade science, social studies extension and computer applications.
Mr. Carter taught several grade levels and many curriculum areas during his 30 years of service. He is passionate about teaching in science and social studies classrooms, where he shared technology with his students every day.  He instructed using hands-on experiments. Students say they loved going to his classes, and they learned something new each day.
Upon retirement, Mr. Carter plans to travel.
"It has been a privilege to work with each of these teachers.  We at Smiley Elementary will miss both Mrs. Carter and Mr. Carter," said Mrs. Jones, principal.
