Visitors can see what night life was like for Civil War soldiers at Fort McAllister during an hour-long candlelight tour there starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.
For the past 25 years, volunteers have been leading patrons through the fort by candlelight during this annual event, said Daniel Brown, the park manager at Fort McAllister.
Visitors meet up at the visitor center and are escorted through the fort and see different scenes of soldier night life. The tour ends with a cannon firing, Brown said.
Tickets are $3.50 for children and $5 for adults. No flashlights, please.
Fort McAllister was built during the Civil War to protect the Ogeechee River, Brown said
“Whoever controlled the river controlled the rice plantations and cotton plantations up the river,” he said.
Fort McAllister was captured in 1864 by Gen. William T. Sherman. It is now a historic park owned by the state.
