Gospel music is different than regular music. Local gospel singer Terry Newsome said it has the power to change lives. “It’s not just for entertainment,” he said. “The hope of Jesus is the only hope we have when we have nothing else.”
That’s the message Newsome said he’s trying to promote in his new album, “Soul’d Out,” and will stress when he performs Aug. 21 at the Mt. Zion “Beyond the Walls” benefit concert.
The artist said “Soul’d Out” was inspired by people in his life and their experiences. The songs are about people’s relationship with Jesus. They’re about the struggles of Christians and how to get yourself through those and let Christ pick you back up again. There’s always a place for Jesus even when people make mistakes, he said.
The project took Newsome almost two years to complete and was done independently. Newsome wrote all of the songs for his new album, composed some of the music and mixed some of the tracks.
Though he said he had a tough time choosing a favorite because he poured so much of his heart into all of the songs he wrote, Newsome’s favorite tune on this album is “I Surrender.” “I like the way it came together, the feel of it. It’s just a cool song to listen to. Even though it talks about giving up, the music is cool and it has a strong message,” he said.
The musician will share his message and his music at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at a benefit concert. Proceeds from the event will help Mt. Zion Baptist Church’s Beyond the Walls Ministry build a center to help Hinesville’s homeless population. All the construction in the area has driven homeless people out of places they once made into homes, Newsome said. He’s seen people with nowhere else to go sitting on sidewalks in the heat. “My heart went out to the homeless,” he said.
Though Mt. Zion has been helping less fortunate members of the community for years, Pastor M.L. Jackson said he decided they needed to step things up and build a center to help the needy.
When it is complete, the Beyond the Walls Ministry Center will provide temporary shelter, food, clothes, furniture, appliances, school uniforms and many other services to those in need, Jackson said.
Newsome, who also works at New Age salon, agreed to take part in a benefit concert to further the center’s progress. “We’re giving proceeds from sales to the completion of the building,” he said.
“Feeling like you’ve helped someone is the most rewarding feeling anyone can have,” Newsome said. “That’s why I love gospel. You help people and get to see folks do better in life.”
The concert is free, but patrons will be asked to donate what they can. This will be Newsome’s last concert in Hinesville before he moves to Fayetteville, N.C. “I’ve been here for 17 years, and I want to thank everyone in the community for their years of support and for helping spread my music,” he said.
