Fort Morris State Historic Site will present its annual Memorial Day Commemoration from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, May 30. The Friends of Fort Morris cannon crew will conduct cannon demonstrations, musket drills and soldier talks on the hour to honor those who fought for and still fight for the nation’s liberty.
Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic lunches and enjoy the afternoon. Fort Morris is seven miles east of Interstate 95 off exit 76 in historic Sunbury. Admission is $4 for adults, $3.50 for seniors (ages 62 and older) and $2.75 for youth (ages 6-18). Children ages 5 and younger are free.
Fort Morris originally was established after the Continental Congress convened in 1776. The delegates recognized the importance of a fort to protect their growing seaport from the British. Soon afterwards, a low bluff on the Medway River at Sunbury was fortified and garrisoned by 200 patriots. When the British demanded the fort’s surrender Nov. 25, 1778, the defiant Col. John McIntosh replied, “Come and take it!” The British refused and withdrew back to Florida.
