Look out — the folks at Liberty Regional Medical Center plan to go hog wild tomorrow as the primary organizers of the first annual “Porker Run” for the 2010 American Diabetes Association’s Kiss-A-Pig Campaign.
The event’s title, a play on words, ties into this year’s Kiss-A-Pig theme, “Harry Porker and the Blood Sugar Prince Battle for Control.”
Liberty County Hospital Authority Chairman Jon Long is this year’s Team Liberty candidate. He is vying to earn the right to kiss Hamlet the pig at the ADA’s announcement gala next Friday in Savannah.
Long and his campaign co-chairs, Rene’ Harwell and Donna Cochrane, already have organized and hosted successful fundraisers.
“I have been fortunate to have an experienced team behind me,” Long said. “The Dorchester Clay Shoot, still the largest single fundraising event for Southeast Georgia, was the biggest boost of all to my campaign.  I was honored to be asked to represent Liberty County this year and whether we win or not, this community strongly supports American Diabetes Association.”
On May 1, the gang had a “Cook for the Cure” event at the Midway IGA store, which raised $2,500.
“IGA owner Jim Woods, Midway City Councilman Levern Clancy Jr. and Levern Clancy Sr. cranked up the smokers at 3 a.m. Saturday morning and cooked until 8 p.m. that night,” Danny Creasy of the Heritage Bank said. “They were real troopers and worked really hard to make this a successful event.”
Creasy was the 2008 Team Liberty candidate and overall Kiss-A-Pig winner.
Tomorrow’s Porker Run is open to motorcycles, cars and trucks.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Liberty Regional Medical Center, 462 E. G. Miles Parkway. Fees are $20 per person and $5 for additional hands.
For more information, call Ken Porter at 492-8445 or Harwell at 369-9491.
