Gossip, trials and tribulations will take center stage this weekend at the Dorchester Village Civic Center when the Liberty Theatre Company and the Hinesville Area Arts Council presents “Steel Magnolias.”
Both the Friday and Saturday 7:30 p.m. showings have sold out, HAAC Vice Chairwoman Jennifer Buehler said. Tickets are still available for the 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Admission is $10 at the door and advanced tickets for the Sunday show will not be sold. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The six actresses who play the main parts, Buehler, Vicki Davis, Jasmine Kersey, Barbara Pilkinton, Elizabeth Mullis and Dana Dodge, auditioned for their roles, Buehler said.
“This has been a wonderful experience for all involved and we are thrilled to be able to perform such a popular show and provide quality programming to the residents of Liberty County,” she said.
According to a play flier, the play is a story of friendship and love for all things Southern: “In the world of Truvy’s local, homegrown beauty salon, six very different women come together to share their secrets, fears and love for one another while engaging the audience in hysterical and neighborly gossip. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they share each moment in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coiffed hair. When tragedy strikes, it is in the familiar comfort of Truvy’s salon where they seek the solace and support that carries them through.”
Buehler, who plays M’Lynn Eatenton, has a degree in fine arts with a concentration in theater. The amateur actress said she has wanted to star in a “Steel Magnolias” production since college.
“I’m just tickled to be doing this show,” she said during dress rehearsal Monday night.
Her co-star, Jasmine Kersey, who plays daughter Shelby Eatenton, said she loves drama as much as her stage mother and was an actress all throughout high school and college.
“I consider ‘Steel Magnolias’ one of those southern iconic pieces of art. I hope people will get the love of being southern,” Kersey said. “I have always wanted to be in ‘Steel Magnolias.’”
Because of the popularity of the original movie, which starred Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton, an additional show was added, she said.
All proceeds go back to the HAAC and generally fund the next production, said Buehler.
Liberty Theatre Company is the performing arts arm of the HAAC. Since its formation in February 2009, the company has produced four plays for the community.
