A few tips for St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah
st. pat's parade map

If you’re planning on attending the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah on Monday, here are a few tips for the event.

The parade itself starts at 10:15 a.m. at the intersection of Gwinnett and Abercorn. The City of Savannah will begin shutting down the streets along the parade route the night before, so you’re going to have find places to park. There will be shuttles running to and from the parade area and there are bleacher spots available – for a price. You can find those at https://savannahsaintpatricksday. com/bleachers/. But beware that they could be sold out, too.

If you want to take part in the “land rush” to get a spot in one of the city’s squares, that starts 6 a.m. Monday. Those squares are Taylor, Oglethorpe, Lafayette, Johnson, Wright, Madison and Chippewa.

Items prohibited in the squares are: glass containers, grills, Styrofoam, amplified sound, kegs, scaffolding, stages, advertisements, barriers, bartenders, ladders and personal portable toilets. Those who are successful in finding a spot in the “land rush” are asked to bring trash bags to pick up after themselves.

No tents may be set up in advance.

Also, in the celebration area, there will be food trucks available.

The city’s famous to-go cup zone boundary will be extended for March 17 only. It will go from River Street to the Talmadge Bridge on one end and then bounded by Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and to the Truman Parkway at the other and extended to Victory Drive. Local bars and restaurants will be allowed to give to-go cups to their patrons in this extended zone, however, cannot serve through windows or doors out to the public.

Those going to downtown Savannah for the festivities are asked to leave their pets at home and to use the facilities provided if they have to go to the bathroom. The most arrests during the St. Patrick’s Day events stem from public urination.

All vehicles must be removed from the parade by 12:01 a.m. Monday. If your car is towed, you will need to go to Savannah Police Department Headquarters at 201 Habersham Street to obtain your release form and learn where your vehicle is located.
