Keep Liberty Beautiful is looking for Boat Captains to volunteer their time and boat to transport volunteers to St. Catherine's Island for our Annual Beach Sweep 2021. This year's Beach Sweep is on Saturday, September 11, 2021. The Boat Captains can leave and return to Halfmoon Marina or Sunbury Boat Ramp. We check-in at 8:00am and usually return by 1:00pm.
We usually need about ten boats to adequately provide seating for our volunteers. Launch fees for your boat will be paid by KLB for Halfmoon Marina. We also provide all the cleanup supplies, food, drinks, and T-Shirts. State and County PPE guidelines will be followed. If you are a Boat Captain and would like to participate or find out more information, please contact KLB at (912) 880-4888. You can also sign up on Form Link: https://bit.ly/beachsweep2021
For cleanup volunteers, if you have not been on one of our annual Beach Sweeps on St Catherine's Island, you or in for a treat. A beach sweep means that we will be 'sweeping' any trash and debris left on the beaches by beach visitors. We often find items that may have been tossed on the mainland ending up on the Beach. We usually have a high number of volunteers for this cleanup. It is one of the most popular cleanups we do. I cannot blame volunteers for wanting to attend because if you are willing to pick up litter, why not opt to do it on a sandy white beach! Sounds terrific to me!
Since seating is limited by our transportation availability, we encourage interested volunteers to register as soon as possible. So, the time to register is NOW! Our registration list fills up quickly. We book volunteers in the order we receive their requests. You can sign up on Form Link: https://bit.ly/beachsweep2021. You can also contact KLB by phone at (912) 880-4888 or email klcb@libertycountyga.com to register and to find out more information!
Our next quarterly Recycle It! Fairs are scheduled in September for Saturday, September 18. This is another event that helps you if you start sorting and packing items now that you would like to recycle. We provide quarterly Recycle It! Fairs for collecting numerous household items that cannot be dropped off at local recycling drop-off centers. We partner with several community partners to make these recycling and collection opportunities possible. Our partners for this event are Liberty County Road Department, Liberty County Solid Waste, local law enforcement, Funds2Orgs, Rotary Club of Hinesville, Savannah Shredding Company, 1800 Got Junk, and the cities of Midway and Walthourville. This quarter's fairs will be open on Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 9:00am until 1:00pm at two convenient locations:
Liberty County Community Complex
9397 East Oglethorpe in Midway
Walthourville City Hall
222 Busbee Drive in Walthourville
Here are the items we recycle at the fairs:
- Electronics and electronic accessories
- Cell phones and accessories
- CFL's and fluorescent light bulbs
- Used motor oil and antifreeze
- Car batteries.
- Household batteries
- Printer ink and toner cartridges
- Telephone books, large sale catalogs, and books
- Household goods and clothes and shoes (gently used, please)
- Old prescription medications and over the counter medications (no needles or syringes)
We will also host a Shred It! Day as well at the Walthourville City Hall site on September 18. You want to start sorting any legal, medical, or financial files you would like to safely recycle by shredding the documents. The Shred event will also be available from 9:00am until 1:00pm (you must be in line by 12:45pm).
KLB will also sponsor the September Chamber Progress through People Luncheon on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 12 noon at the Performing Art Center on East Oglethorpe Highway. Registration for this luncheon is arranged through the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce by September 13, 2021, at operations@libertycounty.org or (912) 368-4445.
Don't forget to donate your shoes from now until September 18, 2021. We hope you plan to join us on August 21, 2021, to conduct the Great Georgia Pollinator Census from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the KLB office. Please RSVP at https://bit.ly/pollencensus to ensure we have enough supplies and food.
