BOE sets work list for state aid

Work on several Liberty County schools could be ahead, after school board members were presented their capital projects for the fiscal year.

Board members are expected to approve the list at their next meeting to send to the state Department of Education for state funding help.

A renovation for Bradwell Institute is in the plans that will be done in three phases and cost approximately $6.5 million, with a state Department of Education reimbursement covering about $1.4 million and education special purpose local option sales tax.

The renovation will be similar to what has been done at other schools, operations director Arnold Jackson said, with improvements to bathrooms, lighting, flooring, ceiling and painting.

Also on tap is a new HVAC system at Frank Long Elementary School, with a price tag of $1.5 million. The state is planned to reimburse the local school system $672,000 for the work.

A new Midway Middle School roof also is on the drawing board, at a total cost of $1.4 million. The state is expected to foot about $600,000 of the total cost, with ESPLOST taking care of the rest.

Bradwell’s air conditioning system has been having mechanical issues but doesn’t require total replacement. The system was replaced seven years ago, and the state DoE reimburses the Liberty schools for air conditioning work every 10 years.

The air conditioning system at Liberty County High was bought two years ago but it has had some lightning strikes and that has shorted out some circuits.

The school board has to approve its facilities improvement application by November 1.
