ATLANTA — For the first time, Bradwell Institute is participating in the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement Georgia United Nations Assembly (GUNA). GUNA is a simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and, multilateral diplomacy. Members of the Engage Club at Bradwell Institute are representing seven different nations at the Assembly in Atlanta.
Attendees included:
• Briana Battle — Representing Belarus
• Rocky Bosch Jr. — Representing Columbia
• Henry Dickey — Representing United Kingdom
• Lillian Hunnewell — Representing Georgia
• Antonio Palmer — Representing United Kingdom
• Nathan Ramirez — Representing Nicaragua
• Jeshua Mora Contreras — Representing Nicaragua
• Logan Tenorio — Representing North Korea
In GUNA, students take on roles as ambassadors and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization. Participants research a country, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. During a simulation they must employ a variety of communications and critical thinking skills to defend and advance the policies of their country.
Advisors Clint Murphy and James Boyce said that the enthusiasm students bring toward their task and the relationships the student build really are critical to success in today’s economy.
“Student gain from expanded awareness of the world and world issues, make new friends, build their confidence, have fun and a great time with a specific purpose. In today’s world, experience with communication, consensus building, and compromise are so important in international affairs and Bradwell students are being prepared to compete on the world stage,” Murphy noted.
