The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce’s monthly People Through Progress luncheon, held Sept. 17 at the Performing Arts Center, was sponsored by Keep Liberty Beautiful.

KLB Director Sara Swida discussed her organization’s efforts to promote maintenance of lawns and gardens among a number of environmentally friendly initiatives.

Guest speaker Anthony Fulton, senior community relations specialist for WellCare Health Plans, spoke of his company’s Community Garden Initiative. WellCare is one of three health-care companies that provide managed care for adults and children who are eligible for Medicaid as well as children age 18 and younger who part of PeachCare for Kids. Neighborhoods and nonprofit organizations can apply for grants to maintain small gardens designed to provide low-income families with access to fresh fruits and vegetables they might not otherwise have.
