Labor department automates claims process

ATLANTA — The state Labor Department has launched a new online system to process unemployment claims.

The State Information Data Exchange will enable employers to respond promptly to the agency when a former employee files an unemployment insurance claim through the secure website. Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says Georgia is among 10 states launching the electronic system aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing the program's operating costs.

Previously, all unemployment insurance correspondence between the Labor Department and the employer has been through the U.S. Postal Service. Butler says this will speed communications between the labor department and employers, while helping to prevent overpayments to people who may not qualify for benefits.

Employers are encouraged to register for the system by logging on to the Labor Department website.
