Local DQ among hacked stores

Hinesville’s Dairy Queen is on a list of restaurants that have been hit by a security breach during August, the company announced Thursday.

It is one of 395 across the country, including the one in Pembroke.

“As a result of our investigation, we discovered evidence that the systems of some DQ locations and one Orange Julius location were infected with the widely-reported Backoff malware that is targeting retailers across the country.,” DQ President and CEO John Gainor wrote in a letter to customers.

The company is offering free identity repair services for one year to customers who used a payment card at one of the impacted locations during the relevant time period. The company has posted information about these services and other steps customers can take to help protect themselves on the company’s website at
