The Long County Chamber of Commerce had its 2010-11 installation banquet Tuesday at the Ludowici Church of God. The organization installed new officers and recognized the county’s business of the year.
Acting President Gaynell Garrason welcomed everyone and the Rev. Tom Gardner, of Ludowici Church of God, offered an invocation.
Education Committee Chairwoman Ann Parker recognized recent Long County High School graduate Linda Stephens as the winner of the chamber’s $500 scholarship. Stephens was the 2010 class salutatorian and she maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout high school, Parker said.
Economic Development Committee Chairman Kerry Hunt presented a plaque to Kent Hall, owner of Hall’s Electric, which was recognized as Long County’s business of the year.
Hall said he’s been fortunate to have been a resident of Long County since 1951, and he was blessed to have been raised by two Christian parents. Hall also said he’s thankful for his relationship with God, his family, his church family and his community family.
“If we’re not helping our brothers and sisters in our community, then we’re falling short for what we need to be doing,” Hall said.
Following Hall’s presentation, keynote speaker Allen Brown addressed the group. He said not only is it important to get up to bat, but that you also needed to “swing the bat” once you got there.
Brown administered the oaths of office to the incoming directors and the new president.
Hunt, the chamber’s incoming president, addressed the group and talked about his goals for the year.
“I have two goals for this year and I can’t do them without your help. I want us (the chamber) to become incorporated, and I want to set up a charity golf tournament,” he said.
The other new chamber officers are Vice President Garrason, Secretary Miriam Murray and Treasurer Cathy Atkins.
The board of directors includes the new officers and Alice Manning, Kadee Dasher, Kent Hall, Deotha Johnson and Lillian Simmons.
Outgoing directors were Mary Hamilton, Barb Parker and Hazel Woods.
Some of the projects that the Long County Chamber of Commerce heads include the STAR Student-Teacher Program, Business After Hours Networking, Progress For People Breakfast, and the Annual Christmas Party.
