Four Liberty County industrial employers are seeking candidates for paid apprenticeships that will begin in August.
The Liberty County Manufacturing Collaboration — comprised of Elan Technology, Firth Rixson Forgings, Interstate Resources and SNF Holding Co. — is offering the two-year apprenticeships in partnership with Savannah Technical College and the Liberty College and Career Academy.
The program will provide apprentices with job experience while they complete coursework for associate of applied science degrees with a specialization in manufacturing technology.
Prospective apprentices and their parents are encouraged to attend an information session from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at the academy. Representatives of the industries will answer questions.
During their first year, program participants will work 20 hours per week on a three-month industry rotation. Elan Technology manufactures ceramic and glass insulators for electronic components. Firth Rixson forges metal aerospace products. Interstate mills kraft linerboard at its Riceboro mill. SNF is the world’s largest manufacturer of water-soluble polymers.
During the second year, apprentices will focus on one manufacturer. After the program, apprentices will be considered for employment.
“Manufacturing is resurging in the United States, and there are excellent opportunities right here in Liberty County for young adults to launch and build a career in exciting and highly technical areas,” said Chris Bohlmann, Firth Rixson’s vice president and general manager. “I encourage any student who has a good work ethic, is curious about how things are made and how they work, and who is willing to invest time and energy to apply immediately. This experience will expose young adults to a number of exciting areas including aerospace, advanced manufacturing processes, chemical processing, materials conversion, and project management.”
To qualify, students must be enrolled in either Savannah Tech or in the academy. Preference will be given to those enrolled in who have completed the certified manufacturing-specialist program. Liberty County residents will also be given preference.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and pass the Compass test as well as physicals, drug screenings and background checks.
