Sawgrass Landing, a planned $50 million residential and commercial development, is scheduled to begin construction in Midway this fall.
ABG Development recently purchased the 372-acre plot of land from its parent company, Midway Holdings. For years the property has been known as Glebe Plantation.
A majority of the land lies in the unincorporated area of Liberty County near the I-95 corridor, ABG director Scott Ronning said.
The development will feature single-family homes and townhomes ranging from $160,000 to $300,000, he said. The commercial portion of the development will include retail centers, and Ronning promises the centers will not resemble strip malls.
The commercial businesses are expected to include restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, gift shops and drug and retail stores, Ronning said.
“I think this development is a marvelous idea,” Midway Mayor Don Emmons said. “The new stores will create jobs for the citizens in our community, and our residents can stay near Midway to do their shopping and enjoy some recreation.”
There is also a significant amenities package featuring pools, parks, green space, walking and biking trails and large lakes for boating and fishing, Ronning said.
With a reduction of impervious surfaces, such as roads, driveways and rooftops, Sawgrass Landing will also be an environmentally friendly development, Ronning said.
Mayor Emmons said Sawgrass is representative of the future of Midway, as the city progressively becomes a more desirable location to live, work and shop when it arrives in the fall of 2008.
