A 6-year-old child was wounded Friday morning by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to law enforcement authorities.

Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles said the child had acquired a handgun at a home on Sandy Run Road and fired the weapon, with a projectile striking the child in the chest.

The child was flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah where his condition is unknown.

Nobles said how the child acquired the gun is under investigation.
