A Hinesville man was struck and killed Sunday evening while attempting to cross West Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville.

According to Hinesville  police, the man described as a 53 year old Hinesville resident was attempting  to cross the heavily traveled roadway shortly after 7 p.m. when he was struck by a white Scion vehicle on the 1000 block of West Oglethorpe Highway according HPD Traffic Accident Investigator, Corporal Michael Ramirez.

Ramirez identified Leroy Mitchell, 53 of Hinesville as the person killed in Sunday’s accident while riding a bike on West Oglethorpe. Ramirez said the man was initially struck by the Scion and within minutes was struck by another vehicle when the other driver attempted to avoid hitting the Scion.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene. Ramirez said it is too early to determine whether charges will be filed. 

The accident remains under investigation.
