Deputy in accident
Authorities work on the wreckage after a multi-car accident sent several people to the hospital, including a sheriff's deputy.

A Liberty County Sheriff’s deputy was among those injured in a multi-vehicle accident Thursday night in Liberty County.

The deputy and several other motorists injured in a multi car wreck on East Oglethorpe Highway on the overpass commonly referred to McIntosh Mountain around 8:30 p.m.

The deputy and several others had to be extracted from their vehicles.

GSP Trooper Chris Ashdown and Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Al Hagan said the deputy was involved in pursuing a black Dodge Charger. The driver of the charger fled from the scene and authorities are searching for him.

The deputy and two other patients were transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville. One victim was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

According to reports, the driver of the Dodge, whose car was wrecked but he managed to run from the scene, was seen doing doughnuts in the Walmart parking lot. As Hinesville police approached, the driver fled, and the police began a chase.

A deputy picked up the chase in Flemington. The driver lost control at Spencer Golden and East Oglethorpe Highway but got his vehicle back onto the road, where he struck three other vehicles and the deputy’s vehicle.
