According to Hinesville Police Department traffic investigator Max McLendon, Nan Thompson, 74, was traveling Eastbound on Ga. 84/38 at the intersection of Becky Street around 6:30 Monday morning in her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix when she was struck head on by a vehicle driven by Joseph Knight, 20. McLendon said it appeared Knight, who was driving a 1995 Toyota Tacoma pick-up, was traveling west at the time and drove into the eastbound lane, hitting Thompson and spinning her vehicle counter clockwise.
Another woman was involved in the accident. Dawn Gregory, 33, who was traveling behind Thompson, told police she suddenly saw the lights of Thompson's car and tried to change lanes to avoid hitting her, but collided with Thompson's left rear quarter panel. She was treated at the scene and released.
Thompson, who sustained possible fractures in the accident, was flown by Life Star to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Knight was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital on Fort Stewart. Conditions of the victims are unknown at this time.
The accident tied up rush hour traffic in Hinesville for several hours.
