The application deadline is July 13 for parents in Liberty County who want to transfer their children to a different school within the system.
“We’re going to hold to the deadline,” Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer said.
Request forms are available at and should also be returned to the Liberty County Board of Education building.
With the passing of House Bill 251, Georgia parents are now allowed to transfer their children to other schools in the area that have available space.
The schools in the area that have extra room include Joseph Martin Elementary School, Liberty Elementary, Lyman Hall Elementary and Midway Middle School.
If parents choose to relocate their children, they will be responsible for transporting the students.
According to Mary Alexander, assistant superintendent for student services, the bill doesn’t give parents complete free reign.
“HB 251 Public Choice is only available within the school district,” she said.
As of Thursday, Scherer said, the BoE hasn’t had a lot of parents applying. She also said parents should know that no matter what school their child attends, they will be given the same education.
“We offer quality programs at all our schools. We have the same curriculums and same expectations,” she said.
If there are more applications than available seats in a particular school, the school system will hold a lottery.
