MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — Kelsey Higgason, a 2014 Long County High School graduate, recently was named a winner in Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program.
Higgason earned a 3.9 grade-point average while taking courses such as Advanced Placement literature, AP chemistry and AP biology. She also juggled extracurricular activities, such as soccer, cross-country and being on the yearbook staff.
She volunteered more than 150 hours last year with an animal shelter, foster children and the United Way.
Higgason plans to attend Armstrong State University on a soccer scholarship and study forensic science and sociology in children.
The program recognizes more than 2,300 young volunteers nationwide who have impacted their communities through volunteerism. Seventy-one youth from Georgia each will receive a $50 gift card and recognition certificate.
Also, each winner qualifies for the chance to receive a $1,000 regional scholarship for higher education. Of the nearly 200 regional winners, 10 national winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.
“At Kohl’s we believe in giving back to our communities, and we are delighted to honor the more than 2,300 local level winners nationwide who have given their time and talent to do just that,” said Bevin Bailis, Kohl’s senior vice president, communications and public relations.
“Through their service these youth are truly making a positive impact on their communities.”
