Kelly Lachowsky, a Liberty County 4-H member, represented Georgia 4-H at the 2018 National 4-H Youth Summit for Healthy Living held Feb. 16-19 at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
The National 4-H Youth Summit for Healthy Living is a four-day conference for high school youth. This event developed youth knowledge and skills in addressing today’s health related issues, including nutrition education, physical fitness, wellness and emotional wellbeing.
Lachowsky has been an active member of the Liberty County 4-H club for four years. She has participated in Project Achievement, Food Challenge, Forestry Judging, Land Judging, Poultry Judging, and Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging. She also is a 4-H teen leader at numerous activities and events, directing younger youth in their 4-H project work.
At the summit, Lachowsky participated in a variety of workshops, learned from professionals in health-related fields and created action plans to implement projects to promote healthy living back in her local community. The structure of the summit maximizes the amount of hands-on learning experiences and translates that learning to direct outcomes. Lachowsky completed an application package and was chosen as one of the seven youth to represent Georgia 4-H.
“I was ecstatic finding out that I was chosen as a delegate to attend this summit and represent Georgia 4-H. It was an incredible experience because I not only got to meet other 4-H’ers worldwide, but I was able to learn more about healthy living and how to teach this topic in fun, interactive ways to every age group,” Lachowsky said. “Good nutrition combined with physical activity can help you live a healthy and happy life. I’m eager to share what I learned and get others on the right track to being healthy.”
Lachowsky plans to work with Kasey Bozeman, Liberty County 4-H agent, and Gypsy Tart, Liberty County 4-H program assistant, to begin teaching healthy living activities at after-school 4-H programs at the Fort Stewart School Age Center, and possibly at the Liberty County Recreation Department’s after-school program.
