Four employees with a combined total of 100 years of service were recognized by the Long County Board of Education at the June meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters presented plaques of appreciation to Pam McDonald, Miriam Harden, Mike McCall and Eugene McDuffie. The four retired after the 2008-09 school year.
McDuffie served as a bus driver for 12 years. Harden was a teacher for 30 years. McDonald was a teacher/media specialist for 30 years and McCall was a teacher for 32 years.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Glenn Purcell also congratulated each of the school system’s teachers of the year for 2008-09.
Jennifer Futch was Smiley Elementary School’s teacher of the year. Karen Harrell took the honor at Walker Middle School, and Denise Montgomery was chosen for Long County High School.
The board also approved coaches for different sports programs at each of the schools and selected the athletic director for the 2009-10 school year.
Karen Swindell will serve as Long County High School’s AD. Head coaches will be Kyle Wilson for football, Deshon Brock Jr. for boys basketball, Brian Thomas for baseball, Marc Roe for golf, Gerald Toney for cross country, Jennifer Alfirov for softball, Ryan Bailey for girl’s basketball, Myron Grimes for boys track, Faith Jefferson for girls track and Pam Crews for cheerleading.
At Walker Middle School Amanda Whiden was named athletic director. Head coaches will be William Hadley for boys basketball, Beverly Hill for girls basketball, Shawn Peek for baseball, Julie Daffron for softball, Darryl Mosley for boys soccer, Cindy Davis for girls soccer, Gerald Toney for boys track, Deidre Mansel for girls track, Whitney Scott for cheerleading and Kipp Collins and Michael Austin for football.
In other business:
• The board chose Dempsey Golden to serve on the Long County Library Board.
• The board approved the Long County 4-H Club’s use of the high school’s cafeteria for an awards banquet on Aug. 8.
