The Long County Board of Education voted at its meeting Dec. 8 to change the student information software its schools use.
According to Superintendent Robert Waters, the old software package was called School Administration Student Information (SASI). Since the maker of the system no longer offers it, he recommended changing to a new system, PowerSchool.
PowerSchool is a student information system used by over 10,000 schools across the country. According to Waters, the package will be used in all Long County schools to handle student information such as scheduling, attendance and grades.
In other meeting matters:
• Waters informed the BoE that vice chairperson Florence Baggs was recognized at the 2008 Georgia School Board Association Conference for her 16 years of service on the Long County School Board.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to work with this board, and I have learned a lot since I been on the board,” Baggs said.
• The board also scheduled a work session for 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 for its members to review the instructional budgeting section for next year’s budget. The initial meeting is scheduled for two hours.
“At the GSBA Conference, we were told that even though it has been slated for schools to receive a 2-3 percent cut in their funding, they could expect the cuts to be as high as 6-7 percent,” said Chairman Dempsey Golden.
• The board voted to have Golden and Baggs present at the 2008 pre-audit and post-audit by the state’s auditing team for the last fiscal year.
• The board also approved the October 2008 financial report; all members voted in favor of it except for Emma Strickland, who abstained from voting because she said she didn’t have time to review it.
• Board members voted 4-1 to accept the resignation of speech pathologist Shannon Housley, who worked at Walker Middle School. Waters said Housley resigned because she was moving to Brunswick. Golden asked Waters whether a replacement had been found, and the superintendent said no. Golden expressed concern over the teacher not fulfilling her contract, and the probability of the school system not receiving reimbursement funding for an unfilled position.
After a brief discussion, board members Strickland, Baggs, Linda DeLoach, and Billy Hall voted to accept Housley’s resignation, while Golden voted not to accept it.
The next BoE meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the board office in Ludowici.
