Project Reach G.A.N.G. Inc.'s annual "Back to School Rally" is more than a month away, but organizers are spreading the word early, hoping to bring in an even larger crowd than normal.
G.A.N.G. (God's Anointed Now Generation), a local nonprofit youth organization, is in its 11th year of hosting the event, which draws an estimated 2,500 children and their families to Riceboro's Briar Bay Park. It is one of the last summer events in the county, allowing students and parents to enjoy a final carefree Saturday before returning to homework and exams.
The 2008 rally is scheduled to take place July 12 and will feature guest speakers, community leaders, education booths, school supplies, health checks, games, rides, entertainment, horseback riding, refreshments and much more.
To go along with this year's theme, "Hoops and Alley Oops for Education," the special guest will be former Harlem Wizards basketball player Buffy Coleman, of the Buffy Coleman Basketball Show.
The event is free and open to all ages.
G.A.N.G. Executive Director Lavonia LeCounte, in a letter to community members, said there is still time for local businesses and groups to sign up for booth spaces in the park "to give out resource information and school supplies" free of charge. The deadline to secure booth spacing is June 30.
